I Just Can't Back This Up 100%...

"Fashionism"
You know, that little blurb that pops up after you've signed outta hotmail on the MSN page... The one that usually is detailing the best and worst dressed from this week's parties, launches, etc...

Well, when I logged off of hotmail this morning, I decided to check out their picks for "Worst Trends for 2008 - Goodbye and Good Riddance" - by Stephanie McGrath

Ok OK... I agree with such choices as the hippie headband sported by EVERY scenester kid these days...

But "the angled bob"!?!?! SOOOOO 2007!? Let's get the year right first, hun.

Uhm... FEATHERS. She has a problem with feathers!? I'm totally down with a full on feather skirt - such as this little number by Andrew GN

NEXT!

Bangs. Now, as far as trends go, yes. 2008 was the year of the bangs. But I dig 'em.
Since we're on the topic of facial hair here, she apparently also has beef with the moustache. I for one am totally a fan of male facial hair. No objections here!!

Now, I'll give the lady SOME credit. She did make mention of popped collars, ridiculously skin tight man pants, and as per above - the hippie headband... but really. What trends DID you like sweetpea? I'd like to see what you're rockin'.

Vie Vie La Boutique!

I went to Value Village with my mumma on the weekend looking for a gag gift for a friend, when I came accross THIS COAT:

I snatched it up, and even though it was about two sizes too big, I purchased it anyway, determined to take it home to alter it.

Now, uuussssuuuaallly I SAY I'm going to, but I RARELY get around to altering these great finds... But this one was different. And I'm quite pleased with my results!
I was lucky enough that it was double breasted, so I literally just moved the buttons over, spread out the top ones, and voila! It fits like a glove.

I'm officially one step closer to a full on fur coat! lol.

Oh, and let's not forget our cold weather accessories!!

(fox fur ear muffs and eggshell elbow length leather gloves from The Bay dt, fur hat from The Ruby Slipper!)

Some light reading...

If you're looking for a good piece of literature.... This may not be your best bet... But if you're looking for a hilarious piece of coffee table trash, please pick this up!

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
(from site)

Gangsta Gerald

Gangsta Gerald bad.

Gangsta Gerald so bad, he don't pay for no school lunch. He just takes the tots.

Gangsta Gerald so bad, girls making out ain't enough to get Gangsta Gerald to break a smile. Or put up his hoodie.

Because Gangsta Gerald knows he's phat. That's phat with a "ph," not an "f."

Gangsta Gerald just wants to make sure you knew that. About the "ph" and not the "f." Because Gangsta Gerald is sensitive about his weight.

I'll be here ALL night...

For those digging Asian Street Fashion....

The NEXT time you are in Toronto you HAVE to head up to Markham to peep THIS mall...

My first trip I literally stood slack jawed, got lost at least 6 times, enjoyed REALLY good food, purchased WAY too many things, and arrived in the AM and left far beyond when the sun had set...
Seriously, even with its 1500 parking places, if you try to go to this mall on a weekend you'd better plan on parking a few miles away...

This is a SERIOUS mall - check the map...click to enlarge and navigate through the maze of fabulous boutiques!!

* on a slight side note, this mall allows no tax when paying with cash, the right to bargain, and many many pirated movies....That and ridiculously good bubble tea. Taro please!

xxM

"The bosom can ache beneath diamond brooches; and many a blithe heart dances under coarse wool"

Wool has also been used for tea cosies, blankets, saddle cloths, carpeting, felt, wool insulation and upholstery. Even toilet seat covers. Wool felt covers piano hammers, and it is used to absorb odors and noise in heavy machinery and stereo speakers. Traditionally, wool is also used to cover cloth diapers.

I've also a few great wool coats and socks. I know merino wool long underwear is quite popular among women and men active in the outdoors. And...wool is used to make men's suits!

The wool bow tie is versatile, and can be worn as a choker with a t-shirt and the plaid shirt worn unbuttoned. A confident man can rock this. A man I'd date.

♥S

Individualism

Now, I'm totally one for "individuality"
And I get that there is an artistic element to designing something "innovative" or doing something "new"...

The fact of the matter is, wool is reserved to hats/mitts/scarves/sweaters/leg warmers and the occasional blanket or rug.

I'm not 100% sure where you would don the wool knit bow tie....

But that's MY prerogative.

The simplicity in the site is dope. I can dig that. I may even be a fan of a few scarves.

I'd totally purchase THIS

SHOKAY

Someone I know tells me that he believes there's a need in today's society for DIY fashion. Knitting, for example. Patterns you can purchase, cool yarn...little does he know, it's already being done. Seems like everything is though, really. Original ideas are few and far between these days, but - Then there's Shokay. Not only can you shop online and purchase items that they have made, (see my personal favourite below)

you can also purchase yarn for yourself and snag some free patterns!! The word "shokay" means "yak down," which only comes from remote and isolated locations in the Himalayas in Western China so it is actually quite rare!

They say: "At Shokay, we aim to impact the lives of Tibetan herders in China oppressed by poverty. By introducing luxury yak down to the global market, we hope to create a market for yak fiber, thus increasing the value of the raw fiber to provide herders with long-term employment and a greater sustainable income." See
here for their development impact.

I ♥ sustainable employment.

Canada's First Burberry Boutique

Here in Winnipeg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

............................................................................................err.

Well, in Vancouver, at least. Which is home to a lot of former Winnipeggers! Sigh. M, this means your snow boots are but a 3 hour flight away. Plus we could stay for free! Bonus!

Located in the Living Shanghri-La hotel (which will be Vancouver's tallest tower when it opens in January 2009), the Burberry store is 3179 sq ft and already open on the main level! It features a new design concept by creative director Christopher Bailey.

From what I've heard...the floors are a combination of dark wood and stone, and the surfaces made of black chrome - and there is an ENTIRE room for shoes. Ahhhh....

Burberry at Living Shanghri La is located at 1101 Alberni St at Thurlow - please note, for those not familiar with Vancouver, this is where the expensive shops are. Neighbours include Betsey Johnson, Blubird (which sells Marc by Marc Jacobs, Pucci, M by Missoni, etc), and Agent Provocateur. Nearby are Louis Vuitton, Coach, Ports...you get the idea. For the Veronica Lodge-types only. Or those accustomed to being in debt.

Exchange of Events

Let me start off by saying that I think it's funny that I got so bored that I learned how to do THIS dance...
Then realized it's FULL douche-esque potential when I noted the Sponge Bob version on Youtube...

Anyway,

Today I took off from work early to spend the day shopping in the Exchange with Janique!
We made an appointment at Julie Pedersen's design lab to check out Custom Made Mukluks...If you haven't checked out her line, DO IT NOW!

Here's a link to an article on her Mukluks in The Manitoban...
A great way to stay warm yet uniquely fashionable in the winter. The lady who helped us was very pleasant, and they were more than willing to assist in creating the ultimate boot - from colour to type of fur, to accents on the boot...All-in-all a pretty Rockin' experience I'd say!

We perused October, Candy and Dolls, Cake, a new boutique called UNFOLD - which, for all the male viewers, is a pretty dope store - peep the blue/grey prep school cardigan if you're in... it's fairly amazing. Their women's denim is well priced too!

After the exchange we visited The Ruby Slipper, where we definitely got our share of accessories... I picked up antique bone bangles (apparently retailing at over $100 for $10...), a carved bakelite bangle, and the breath-takingly amazing purple Emanuel Ungaro blazer that S and I found last week (it was still there so I took that as a sign to purchase it...sorry S!)....Oooo! and a black 1920's style clutch!

Janique had heard that REDEEMED (consignment store on Academy) received a shipment of designer shoes in size... Prada, Gucci, Chanel, and Laboutin shoes/boots, all worn...mmm, maybe twice. Great condition. Great prices. The ladies who worked there knew where all the best of the best in the store were, and we ended up finding an amazing pair of Chanel grey wool dress pants, some Gucci pieces - cardigan & sweater vests, and dresses from Maxmara & Simon Chang, that will one day fit someone the way they should - and on that day Janique and I will be devestatingly jealous!!  <3

What are 2 girls to do after a full day of retail therapy?

Sushi at Bluefish!

Beautiful restaurant, delicious food - they have amazing martini specials, and absolutely the best service I've had in a long time *go see Nadine, she's superb!

A New Era

We figured we'd throw it back to the 1920's with last night's photo shoot!

Now, we used my good friend Samantha Anne for the shoot... She's a looker on a bad day, so you can only imagine how she looked after Janique (Absolutely hands down Winnipeg's top makeup artist, owner of Fine Eyes) and I got our hands on her...

All I'm gonna say about this shoot is that we ended up making a 1920's head piece, and some of the photos look straight up sick!

For now delight yourself in some random but fun, Post-shoot/pre-indie-mod-night-dance photos, and keep your fabulous fake-lash-eyes peeled for the new shoot!

Dress Up

Carrie: I just love Sleeping Beauty! The music, the sets, the costumes. It's so romantic!

Stanford: You only like it because she sleeps for a hundred years and doesn't age.”

-SATC

I don't know if you know...but..the Costume Museum of Canada exists! In Winnipeg! I can't believe how many people I've told about this and it all formed while I was away the past two years. Get with it! My first trip to the museum took place almost immediately upon my return to the city. Fabulous hats and shoes galore! They even have a Narnia wardrobe where you can TRY ON some of the goodies. On display were some wedding dresses from years gone by, as well as an exhibit titled Interwoven, which is a whole bunch of International textiles donated by the U of M. Some fascinating pieces!

I swear I don't just like it because I'm all caught up with fashion history...anyone could appreciate the museum. What else is fabulous is their little non-lending library, which is stacked to the nuts with periodicals, books, sewing patterns, etc from 1900 until now! We're talking ancient Vogue and Harpers, girls!! It doesn't even matter that you can't actually sign out any of the books because you can curl up onto the little vintage couch and read the day away...

In addition to the library, there is a shop in the front entrance which features some clothing and crafts by some local designers, as well as a few vintage finds. I picked myself up a Schiaparelli scarf for a meager ten bucks!!

Join their Facebook group, and go to the Wrap Me Up Craft Sale they are having this weekend!

Deets: Saturday, November 29, 11am-5pm, Sunday, November 30, 12pm-4pm at 109 Pacfic Avenue. Locally made crafts, admission only $3.50, and maybe some goodies?

Do it. What else do you have to do?

Getting Ahead...

I can understand that in China/Japan jobs are scarce, and women will do anything they can to get ahead. I remember reading an article quite like the following explaining that things such as height are seen as an asset, or blue eyes, blonde hair... features found more prominently in caucasian women. Due to modern day science, women can actually alter themselves, despite what mother nature has dealt them. And I'm NOT talking about your average every day boob job... peep this...

http://www.marieclaire.com/world/articles/ethnicity-extreme-makeover

"What Some Women Will Do for Beauty
From eyelid surgery to leg-lengthening and calf-narrowing, it seems there is little some women won't do to achieve that iconic look.

Double eyelid surgery
MAGNUS LAUPA/WPN
EXTREME MAKEOVER, PART 1: Double-eyelid surgery (a.k.a. Asian blepharoplasty)

WHY IT'S DONE: About 50 percent of Pacific Asians do not have an upper-eyelid crease. For those who do, the crease falls about 7 mm above the lashline, whereas for Caucasians, the crease falls about 11 mm above it.

HOW IT WORKS: During the most popular version of this outpatient procedure, a crescent-shaped incision is made along the new crease line, and a small amount of skin, tissue, and fat on the upper eyelid is cut away. When the two sides are sutured back together, the incision is hidden under the newly created crease.

PROCEDURE LENGTH: Approximately one hour

RECOVERY TIME: Sutures are removed after about a week. Bruising and swelling usually subside after a month.

COST: $2500 to $5000

ORIGIN: 19th-century Japan. The popularity of the procedure jumps whenever there was a significant Western presence in Asia — for example, during the Korean War.

HOW COMMON: Almost 300,000 Asians in the U.S. had the surgery in 2006.

What Some Women Will Do for Beauty

Would you saw your legs in half for a few inches?
DAVID BUTOW/REDUX
EXTREME MAKEOVER, PART 2: Leg lengthening

WHY IT'S DONE: The Chinese are so height-conscious, jobs and even schools often post height requirements. To apply for the foreign ministry, women must be 5'3" (the national average), whereas flight attendants must be at least 5'5". As a result, being tall — or short — can have a direct impact on one's livelihood.

HOW IT WORKS: Calf and shin bones are broken and pierced with steel pins, which are fixed to an external frame with screws. Then stretching — by means of turning those screws and lengthening the bone at the point where it was broken — is carried out over the next several months. The steel pins are left in for another year as support for the newly regenerated bone.

RANGE OF GROWTH: 1 to 5 inches.

COST: $15,000 to $25,000

RISKS: Horror stories include misshapen legs, feet that splay outward, and bones that never heal properly and break easily. In November 2006, China restricted the procedure to select hospitals that offer post-surgical care and rehabilitation."

*Now, I myself am half Japanese, but definitely cannot identify with the need to alter my physical features in such extreme ways... Then again, I'd say I look more caucasian than asian in my facial features... So, maybe I'm not a good reference point. *shrug
